It is a cosmetic problem. Some people get bad outbreaks – on mouth as well as genitals – which can be sore, but they don’t harm you at all and have no effect on your health. Mine are so tiny and minor they are hardly visible, and don’t hurt at all. The same goes for a lot of people. In fact, 80% of people infected don’t even get recogniseable symptoms.

Until the last few years, no one cared at all about cold sores (oral herpes): they were just something that everyone got occasionally. It is only now, in our health-obssessed times, when people have started to care about them. Genital herpes has an unfair stigma attached to it which it doesn’t deserve – it is only a minor skin infection.

Women who catch genital herpes in the last three months of pregnancy can pass it to their babies during birth – neonatoal herpes, which is dangerous for the baby. But it is rare, and in these times, completely and totally preventable.

wow, sorry to hear that, Amber. Yikes! I think I got oral herpes from a friend who shared a drink with me at the bar. I'm not sure yet, but it appears to be oral herpes. I'm upset cuz I love giving and getting oral sex and don't wish to get genital herpes too.

It is really not a big deal, but it does change you life- It changed mine. I found out i had genital herpes in Dec 2007 it really ruined me for a while. I thought i would never be able to have children. Telling my long term boyfriend, and my family was the hardest thing i have ever done. Just really think about it would you give a guy a chance that has genital herpes and you have a good change of getting it? I dont think so. But anyways- Genital Herpes and Herpes of the mouth NEVER GOES AWAY you may not always have the sores, but you are ALWAYS able to give it to someone else. Herpes of the mouth isn’t as bad as Genital Herpes, but it is still herpes and really it isn’t cosmetic it is a medical condition. An uncurrable virus!!!!!!! So when people freak out they have a right to!!!

Herpes simplex 1 is more a cosmetic thing. The gentital is more medical. It is very difficult for people who have it. They have blister outbreaks that are not pleasant. Wether it is genital or mouth, both are painful and embarrassing.

It is MOST definitely a medical problem and a very real health issue. It is a virus that you will have for life. The virus NEVER goes away, but the sores and lesions do. Only to come back again another time when you have another "outbreak". One in 4 women are HSV positive and one in 5 men are. Many do not know that they are infected and thus the prevalent passing of the virus when couples engage in unprotected sex. I strongly suggest that you do some research. Just google hsv and you’ll be overwhelmed by the number of sources of information that are available out there. If you suspect you might have been exposed……..I STRONGLY suggest you have a blood test done. Unfortunately, one of the reasons this virus is so widespread is because positive antibodies don’t usually show up until several months after exposure. And unless you’re in an active outbreak with sores or lesions that can be cultured, there’s nothing to test.

Also, a mother can pass it on to her child upon birth if it’s a vaginal delivery……that child will be infected for life. In some cases, infants can be very severely affected by the virus which may include: stillbirth (a baby that is born dead), low birth weight (less than five pounds), conjunctivitis (eye infection), pneumonia, neonatal sepsis (infection in the baby’s blood stream), neurologic damage, blindness, deafness to name a few.

While it is mostly a nuisance to an adult, a mother can pass it to a baby when it is being born. If the baby gets it, it can be very dangerous. From herpes.org: Infants exposed to the herpes simplex can experience brain infection, seizures, prolonged hospitalization, mental retardation, and death if the infection takes hold.

It doesn’t go away, you will have Herpes for the rest of your life. Some people may not have symtoms your break-outs come and go, but you are always able to transmit Herpes to other people.
